One of Lyla's little friends, Jacqueline, gave her such a fun birthday present for her 3rd birthday. Jacqueline wasn't able to come to the party, so the present came in the mail. I'll admit, I was a little apprehensive when I opened the front door and saw a package that said "Open Immediately, Live Insects Inside." The present was so cute. It started as larvae in this cup that weren't moving at all when we first opened it. Then they started moving and growing so fast. Below are some pictures to show this fascinating process. Lyla enjoyed it, but I think I actually enjoyed it more than she did.
Look how big they got! We did have to feed them. We fed them cut up oranges and sugar water sprinkled on paper towels.

And then one by one, they hung from the top and spun their cocoons.
Once they were in their cocoons, we had to take the paper disk out of the lid, and pin it to the side of the butterfly net that also came with the kit. They quickly flew out as little butterflies. Some of them bled a little as they came out of their cocoons. It was a little scary looking. I honestly wasn't sure how long we could keep them like this, so we released them pretty quickly.

Here's the fun part. Lyla enjoyed getting them on her finger and watching them fly off. I love these pictures.
There is a butterfly on the tip of her finger.
Look on the far right of the picture below where Lyla's eyes are looking, and you will see a blur that was the butterfly flying away! I would highly suggest this present for any little kids. It was so much fun to watch this process in our own house. The whole process took almost a month. I was so proud of myself for remembering to feed them.
